Turnover Chess: Overview and Rules
Setup:
-
Each player starts the game with 8 Castles positioned on squares opposite their own color on the first and second rows of the board.
-
A Castle consists of a set of a Tower + Fort + Wall.
Objective:
-
The primary objective in Turnover Chess is to checkmate your opponent's last Castle.
Piece Types and Movements:
-
Wall:
-
can move and turnover one square directly forward; can take and turnover 1 square diagonally.
-
cannot take forward; they can only move or turnover forward.
-
can take opponent Walls, Castles, Towers or Fortresses located diagonally forward.
-
can turnover the opponent Citadel or Fort located diagonally forward.
-
-
Fort:
-
Moves, takes, and turns over any number of squares in a straight line diagonally.
-
-
Tower:
-
Moves, takes, and turns over any number of squares in a straight line, both vertically, horizontally.
-
-
Citadel:
-
Moves, takes, and turns over any number of squares in a straight line, both vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.
-
-
Fortress:
-
Moves, takes, and turns over in an L-shape pattern (two squares in one direction followed by one square perpendicular to the initial movement).
-
Special Movements:
-
Castles NOT in check
-
can move and turnover one or two squares directly forward; can take and turnover 1 square diagonally.
-
cannot take forward; they can only move or turnover forward.
-
can take opponent Towers or Fortresses located diagonally forward.
-
-
Castles in check
-
can move the entire Castle 1 square NOT in check in any direction.
-
-
The last Castle of a player
-
can only move to squares NOT in check. If no legal moves exist, it is checkmate or stalemate.
-
Combining Pieces:
-
Pieces can combine by moving an outer piece from one set onto another, creating new combinations.
-
e.g.:
-
Wall + Fort = Fortress,
-
Fort + Tower = Citadel.
-
The last Castle and Castles in check move as an entire set.
-
-
Promotion:
-
Walls and Castles must be promoted when they reach the last row. They are replaced with Citadels.
-
The last Castle is NOT allowed to be promoted.
Stalemate:
-
If the last Castle is NOT in check, and no piece can be moved without putting it in check, it is a draw.
-
If a player has 2 or more Castles, but no piece can perform a legal move, it is a stalemate.
-
If a player has 2 or more Castles, even if all Castles are in check, it is a stalemate if the player cannot perform a legal move.
Legal Move Rule:
-
Players must have at least 1 legal move to be performed; otherwise, it can result in a draw, stalemate, or checkmate.
