See Ralph Betza's first 'ugly ASCII diagram' here for his idea of shifting the standard 8x8 initial setup to the center of a 16x16 board. I started with a similar idea on a 10x10 board and added some more pawns and pieces.

1.f3-f5 g8-g7 2.e3-e4 King f9-g8 3.Bishop g2-f3 King g8-h7 4.Bishop f3-i6 uses both Bishops to checkmate in TenCubed Chess. This mate also works on the 16x16 board.

1.Wizard d1-e4 e8-e7 2.Wizard e4-b5 Bishop d9-e8 3.Wizard b5-e6 is the shortest mate in TenCubed Chess. This mate will also work if wizards are replaced by camels.

TenCubed Chess

    Nice mixture of pieces in this variant!

    edit: Also, this CV reminds me a little of Opulent Chess:

    edit2: Two CVs that might have been inspired by TenCubed Chess (but weren't):

    TenCubed and Opulent were both entries in the 10 Contest.  David and I both decided to use the number 10 by having 10 piece types on an 10-by-10 board, so they are pretty similar.  Although Opulent has seen more play, I think TenCubed is probably the better game.  I have had a very difficult time getting a good opening array in Opulent.  It needs to change yet again ...

    HELP! Both this game and Shatranj Kamil (64) are missing the "As the author of this page..." message box that grants me access. EDIT: Okay. Thanks for the info.

    Estimated endgame piece values on the 10x10 board:

    Pawn=1, Knight=3, Bishop=3.5, Wizard=3.5, Champion=4.5, Rook=5.5, Archbishop=8.5, Chancellor=9.5, Queen=10. A Queen equals two Bishops and a Knight. Also a Queen equals Rook and Bishop plus one Pawn.

    That's because this page is a static HTML page, not a database-driven dynamic page like later entries. (You'll notice the icon is different -- the dynamic pages have a solid blue square with a lower-case letter m).

    What changes would you like to make?

    Nothing special planned for this page. Anything like new endgame piece values can easily be added in a Comment.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    Why disallowing castling? At least I feel comfortable castling in this larger chess board in the game of shako, another 10x10 variant.

    In addition, I would love to see that both cannons and elephants (in shako) are also added to the current army setup of tencubed. i.e. cannons at the corners with elephants in front of the cannons. With so many minor pieces added, the game would be very complicated but with much more fun. :)

    TenCubed Chess represents a vision that I had for variants two decades ago.

    If you are ever looking for a very different game with Cannons and (non-Shako) Elephants, then I would recommend my Shatranj Kamil X. The idea was to create a 22 piece Army with roughly the same strength as the 16 piece FIDE Army on the 10x10 board.
