It seems to be a very interesting game. I have not played PANAL yet, but I´m going to realize some tests of playability, although my first impression is hightly positive!
I suspect the Gunne's shooting variation renders the game unplayable. (Rifle capture is like red pepper, it tastes good, but there should be very little of it. It sent my first game, Bilateral Chess, way off balance.) I would suggest to allow rifle capture by the Gunne only when it is adjacent to its own King, for instance.
Thanks for the comments about the Gunne. The manner in which I try to keep it in balance is twofold... 1) The Gunne is not very mobile, unless it uses the Pao-style capture (instead of shooting) and leaps out into possible danger. 2) The grid in Panal doesn't run straight from player to player, as it does in most hex-games. Shot lines are affected.
The combined root-3 and root-4 leaper makes a very sensible Knight analogue, as the components' independent bindings render the compound itself unbound. Before noticing this variant I used the stepping version as a Mao analogue in my hex XQ variant Trebuqi.
