My rating of 'excellent' applies to this program as being a great opponent with which to practice Xianqi. You actually play against a computer opponent in real time (no long waiting for moves). And you can select from several piece sets. It can also be set for Computer vs Computer of Human vs Human (handy if you wanted to play someone in your house (or a friends) but had no board or pieces. It is a nice arena to knock off the cobwebs, if you're out of practice. In regard to a question (in a previous comment) about setting the board up however you want... I do not see a way to do that.
this is the first time i play chinese wirh human versus computer and the first game i choose is the difficult of number 8 and the second games i chose again advance difficulty which is number 9 with advance difficulty and i find out the computer is reacted very slow .
the rules dont seem to be consistant

The difficulty level is too high for someone like me. I can beat everyone in my family in chess but I can't even win the lowest level here.
Maybe you should add a guide, so that newbies can learn from the opponent. I can't seem to figure out why I lost.
Add a link to wikipedia chinese chess. good instructions there. I love the ability to switch the graphics on the pieces as it's good for learning. I like the ability to back up and change my moves. this is also good for learning. I also like that I am not allowed to move some pieces when I am in Check, without first protecting myself from the check issues.
I have added a link to our own page on Chinese Chess.
Not able to change the pieces by clicking on alternate sets below the board. Suggestions?
Thanks for it! But if there are chinese chess, so why there are no japanese chess (Shogi)? I rather want to play Shogi on computer, than Xian-Qi, because Xian-Qi equipment is easy to make in real life, we drawn board for it and used chess pieces and draughts. And Shogi equipment is not so easy to make!
We take what we can get. I would love to have a strong Java applet for Shogi with customizable graphics, but no one has programmed one.
Good game and good opponent. I like it. It is not easy to get a free Chinese Chess game with no login name and no password. I play here often a few years ago but somehow I could not get to this web site for some time. Good to be back. I suggest the creator to ask the Chinese Government for a funding to promote the Chinese culture.
Consider playing Xiangqi on http://www.playxiangqi.com/ or http://chesscape.com/ It's free. You can also play slow Xiangqi games here: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/presets/chinese_chess.html /Mats
Under the HK rules, a rook may not perpetually chase a cannon. Whereas, this game does not allow a cannon to perpetually avoid a rook! Any chance of fixing this otherwise excellent program? Weng
Much appreciated in providing such good and convenient chess game for me. I play this chess every day. Thanks !
Very good system.. Though, the system is glitchy. Recommend this game to other players.
stupid game design, there are no such game play that you won't allow repeat step or step already went through. Worst programmer ever. Pham Hong Nguyen idea is below average!!!!
Coffee chinese chess 0.6 year 2004 is good you need java to play. Also I'm playing with easy pieces in website playok, no confusion with hieroglyphics pieces. http://www.playok.com/es/xiangqi/ . I recommend.
Given its age, you may now need to put http://play.chessvariants.org/ in your exceptions list for Java to be able to run this. This has been set up to allow you to choose from a variety of piece sets, including 4 different westernized sets.
