Which side moves first? I can see that it wont actually make a difference to game-play but some variants have a standard for it so I am curious to know weather this one does or not.

Szling Ozec - No it does not matter who goes first.  We usually just flipped a coin to determine, or had the loser go first in the following game after playing. 

To the other poster - The Mandarin does not move one hex on the diagonal.  It only moves on the lateral to attack, and hops otherwise.

This game actually changed a bit over the years due a slight stalemate condition that was discovered, and not noticed at the time this entry was posted for the contest. Sorry but I have not been back to this site in almost twenty years, and just happened by it tonight and saw your comment.
